In She Left the China, Kristen Coates arranges a selection of vintage dinnerware like a domestic monument and a whisper of a story that no one quite finished telling. The piece hums with character, romance, wealth, inheritance, abandonment, all left neatly wrapped in porcelain and memory.
As with much of Lost in Paradise, the work plays with ideas of presence and absence, beauty and departure. The woman is long gone. The dishes remain.

“I’m interested in the things people don’t take with them,” Coates says. “The objects left behind often say more than the ones we choose to keep.”
